Quick answers
What is powder coating?
A dry powder is sprayed onto prepared metal and baked in an oven. It melts, bonds with the metal underneath and cures into a hard, continuous layer. There is no solvent and no wet paint film.
How is it different from spray paint?
Spray paint is a coating that sits on the surface, a bit like a crayon on top of the metal. Powder coat is a catalyzed plastic: heat makes it bond to itself and to the metal below, so it comes out hard and strong. Why preparation matters even more than the powder.
How long does it last?
It depends mostly on preparation: a finish is only as good as the metal it grips, which is why stripping and blasting come first. Why prep decides how long a finish lasts, and what the finish has been tested against.
Can you powder coat aluminum?
Yes. Our process does not exceed 500°F, and aluminum does not begin to anneal until around 650°F, so aluminum parts are not at risk.
What cannot be powder coated?
Parts that cannot tolerate oven curing temperatures, and parts with trapped air cavities that cannot be prepared properly. Powder also cannot be applied to a small area as a touch-up: the whole part is coated. If another finish suits your part better, we will say so. Which finish do I need?
Can you match my existing color?
Close, and usually very close. Powder is a dry material, so unlike liquid paint it cannot be tinted to a shade; we match to a physical chip from our supplier ranges. We have four house blacks and around 7,000 colors from our vendor. How color matching works.
Do you remove or install railings and gates?
No. We do not offer any construction services: no removal, no reinstallation, no on-site work. Items come to the shop, and you arrange removal and refit.
Do you take production runs?
Yes. Manufacturers and fabricators bring us parts they make so we can finish them before they sell them. Batch and production work.
Is Cerakote the same thing?
No. Cerakote is a thin ceramic coating, better for hot parts and tight tolerances. Powder coat is thicker and tougher against impact. Auto parts and Cerakote.
